Know your vehicle
Things you've probably heard that aren't quite true.
Most modern engines using synthetic oil go 5,000–10,000 miles between changes. Follow your owner's manual or oil-life monitor. Short trips, towing and Michigan winters can mean sooner.
Only if your manufacturer requires or recommends it. If your manual says regular, premium won't add power or mileage.
Modern fuel-injected engines need about 30 seconds to a minute. Then drive gently for the first few miles. Long idling wastes gas.
That's the maximum pressure, not the right one. Use the sticker inside your driver's door jamb.
Federal law (the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act) lets you use an independent shop for maintenance. Keep your receipts.
A steady light can be minor or the start of something expensive. A flashing light means stop driving and get it checked.
What your car might be telling you, and the usual reasons why.
Usually worn brake pads. Grinding often means metal on metal, which can damage the rotors.
At highway speed: often tire balance. Only when braking: often uneven or warped rotors.
Uneven tire pressure, wheel alignment, or a sticking brake caliper.
Weak battery, loose or corroded battery cables, or a failing starter.
Likely a coolant leak. Watch your temperature gauge closely.
Worn suspension parts like sway bar links, ball joints or struts.
Brown or black: oil. Green, orange or pink: coolant. Red: transmission or power steering fluid. Clear water under the front: usually normal AC drip.
Simple habits that keep repair bills down. Always check your owner's manual for your exact schedule.
Every 5,000–10,000 miles with synthetic, or as your oil-life monitor says.
About every 5,000–7,500 miles, often with your oil change. Check pressure monthly.
Have pads and rotors looked at whenever your wheels are off, or at least once a year.
Most last 3–5 years. Get it tested every fall before Michigan winter hits.
These wear out too. Your manual lists the intervals. We can check them at any visit.
Battery test, wiper blades, washer fluid, tire tread and coolant strength before the first freeze.
Not sure if it can wait? Here's a simple guide.
Flashing check engine light, red oil pressure light, temperature gauge in the red or steam, brake pedal soft or sinking to the floor, smoke, or a smell of raw fuel.
Steady check engine light, new noises, grinding brakes, pulling, shaking, leaks, or AC not blowing cold.
Oil change due, tire rotation, seasonal check-up, or a pre-purchase inspection before you buy a used car.
